Our project combining a graduate seminar at Stanford University with a multimedia installation at the Contemporary Jewish Museum SF was incubated in the New Media in Jewish Studies Collaborative, an initiative of Citizen Film and the Columbia University Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies, funded by an innovation grant from the Jim Joseph Foundation. This website was inspired by Shmattes, a traveling exhibition of Jewish-themed t-shirts. Read Press Coverage

These collaborations have been presented on television (PBS, HBO, IFC, TLC, etc.) and featured at America’s most prestigious venues for documentary art: the Sundance Film Festival, the Museum of Modern Art – New York, LA County Museum of Art, the Hirshhorn, the Whitney, and more.
Stanford University
The Stanford Graduate School of Education is a world leader in ground-breaking, cross-disciplinary inquiries that shape educational practices, their conceptual underpinnings, and the professions that serve the enterprise. The small cohort sizes in the Graduate School of Ed. provide an intimate setting for academic inquiry, fostering individual contact with faculty and fellow students. Through project-based learning in collaboration with fellow students and faculty, the students develop deep disciplinary and interdisciplinary expertise and are prepared for leadership roles in many fields, including Curriculum Studies and Teacher Education, Jewish studies and Technology Design.
Contemporary Jewish Museum
The CJM makes the diversity of the Jewish experience relevant for a twenty-first century audience. We accomplish this through innovative exhibitions and programs that educate, challenge, and inspire. The Museum’s Daniel Libeskind-designed facility enables and inspires its mission. Dynamic and welcoming, it’s a place to experience art, music, film, literature, debate, and—most importantly—people. Our core purpose is to be an engaging forum for diverse audiences where new perspectives on Jewish culture, history, art, and ideas thrive.
New Media in Jewish Studies
Citizen Film and the Columbia University Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies are instigating collaborations around the country with partners ranging from Columbia’s Center for New Media Teaching and Learning to the Contemporary Jewish Museum SF. We use ubiquitous media tools to engage students, professors and audiences in imaginative explorations of Jewish themes. From multimedia portfolios exploring New York photographers and their legacies, to video essays about Jewish life in the Pacific Northwest, our goal is to innovate at the new, visual turn in Jewish Studies scholarship.
